Euphorbia Tirucalli Pencil Tree
Origin & Natural Habitat
-
Native Region: Euphorbia Tirucalli Pencil Tree is native to semi-arid tropical regions, primarily distributed across East and Southern Africa (such as Madagascar, Sudan, and the Horn of Africa), though it has been naturalized in other tropical and subtropical areas around the world.
-
Growth Habit: In its natural habitat, it grows as a large, drought-resistant shrub or small tree up to 30 feet tall, featuring cylindrical, succulent green branches that take on striking coral, orange, or red tones when exposed to intense sunlight (hence the name “firesticks”).
Essential Care Guide
-
Sunlight:
-
Requires full sun to bright indirect light (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) to maintain its vibrant coloration.
-
Indoor specimens should be placed near a south- or west-facing window.
-
-
Soil:
-
Needs exceptionally well-draining soil. Use a standard cactus and succulent mix, or amend potting soil with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand to prevent root rot.
-
-
Watering:
-
Follow the “soak and dry” method. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
-
Reduce watering significantly during the winter dormant months. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline.
-
-
Temperature & Humidity:
-
Thrives in warm temperatures between 20°C to 30°C.
-
It is sensitive to frost and freezing temperatures; bring outdoor plants indoors if temperatures drop below 10°C. Low indoor humidity is ideal.
-
-
Fertilizing:
-
Feed sparingly with a diluted, balanced, low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer once or twice during the active growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize in winter.
