Sansevieria Boncel Variegated
Sansevieria Boncel Variegated (often marketed as the Variegated Starfish Sansevieria) is a highly sought-after mutation of the standard ‘Boncel’ cultivar. Because of its compact footprint, striking colors, and structural shape, it commands a premium in the succulent market and makes a standout addition to the Seedlings India catalog.
Growth & Characteristics
The standard ‘Boncel’ is already a unique mutation of S. cylindrica, cultivated to be shorter, fatter, and more heavily clustered. The Sansevieria Boncel Variegated form takes this architectural shape and adds vivid color.
-
Foliage: The leaves are thick, fleshy, and perfectly round, tapering to a blunt point. They feature bold, longitudinal bands of creamy yellow, chartreuse, and deep green.
-
Form: It grows in a distinct, two-dimensional fan or “starfish” shape from a central basal rosette.
-
Size: It is a true dwarf variety. The thick fingers rarely grow longer than 8 to 12 inches, making it a perfect tabletop or windowsill specimen.
Cultivation and Care
Variegated succulents lack chlorophyll in their lighter sections, meaning they process sunlight less efficiently than their solid-green counterparts. This requires some minor adjustments to standard Sansevieria care:
-
Light: It requires significantly more light than standard snake plants. Bright, indirect sunlight is mandatory to maintain the vivid yellow striping. If placed in a dim corner, the plant will compensate for the lack of light by producing more chlorophyll, and the new growth will revert to solid green.
-
Watering: Because the thick, fleshy spears store a tremendous amount of water, it is highly sensitive to overwatering. The soil must be allowed to dry out completely—100%—between waterings to prevent root rot.
-
Soil: A highly aerated, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix is essential.
