Sansevieria Brazilian Moonshine
Sansevieria Brazilian Moonshine (also widely known among collectors as Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Mutant Moonshine’) is a striking cultivar of the classic snake plant. It is highly sought after for its unique foliage, which adds a dramatic, patterned twist to the popular silvery-green ‘Moonshine’ variety.
Appearance and Growth Habit
While the standard Sansevieria ‘Moonshine’ is known for its smooth, solid mint-green leaves, the ‘Brazilian Moonshine’ mutation introduces bold contrast.
-
Foliage: The broad, upright leaves retain a pale, silvery-green base but are distinguished by dark green to almost black streaks, mottling, or splashes running down the center. The leaves also typically feature distinct, darker green margins.
-
Size: It is a wide-leaf variety that stays relatively compact. The leaves typically range from 9 to 24 inches in height, forming a sturdy, architectural rosette rather than growing into the tall, sword-like shapes of other trifasciata species.
Cultivation and Care
Like most Sansevieria (now formally reclassified under the genus Dracaena), Sansevieria Brazilian Moonshine is a resilient, low-maintenance succulent:
-
Light: It thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. While it will tolerate lower indoor lighting, brighter conditions are necessary to maintain the high-contrast silver and dark green variegation. In very low light, the new leaves may begin to emerge completely dark green.
-
Watering: It is highly drought-tolerant and sensitive to overwatering. The soil must be allowed to dry out 100% between waterings to prevent the rhizome from rotting.
-
Soil: A fast-draining, porous cactus and succulent potting mix—ideally amended with perlite, pumice, or charcoal chips—is essential for keeping the root system aerated.
