Sansevieria Concinna
Sansevieria concinna (now botanically Dracaena concinna) offers a beautiful, delicate contrast to the heavily structured, rigid species you typically see. With its softer, open rosette form, it is an excellent addition to the Seedlings India catalog for customers looking for a more subtle, modern botanical accent for smaller spaces or tabletops.
Origin and Habitat
Unlike the East African varieties, Sansevieria Concinna is native to the coastal and inland regions of southern Africa, specifically found in areas of South Africa, Eswatini (Swaziland), and Mozambique. It grows naturally in the shaded undergrowth of dry forests and rocky outcrops.
Growth & Characteristics
This species departs entirely from the cylindrical or spiked forms of S. cylindrica and S. francisii.
-
Foliage: The leaves are flat, smooth, and somewhat spoon-shaped or lanceolate, tapering to a soft point. They are typically a vibrant, solid apple-green, though some clones exhibit very faint, pale green banding.
-
Form: It grows as a compact, open rosette. It is a true miniature, with leaves rarely exceeding 6 to 10 inches in length, making it ideal for tight spaces.
-
Blooms: When provided with optimal conditions, it is known to be a relatively eager bloomer, sending up surprisingly tall, spidery, white-to-pale-green inflorescences that tower above the low-growing foliage.
Cultivation and Care
Because its leaves are thinner and less fleshy than the heavy cylindrical types, its care requires a slight adjustment, though it remains a highly forgiving succulent:
-
Light: It strongly prefers bright, indirect or dappled light. Because of its natural understory habitat, its softer leaves are more susceptible to scorching in harsh, direct afternoon sun compared to the thicker-skinned species.
-
Watering: While it still requires the “soak and dry” method, its thinner leaves mean it cannot store quite as much water as a S. cylindrica. It may need slightly more frequent watering during the peak summer growing season, but the soil must still dry out completely in between.
-
Soil: A standard, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix is perfect to keep the root system aerated and prevent rot.
