Sansevieria Kirkii

Sansevieria kirkii (syn. Dracaena kirkii), commonly known as Star Sansevieria, is a slow-growing, rhizomatous species native to coastal East Africa (Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Kenya). Unlike tall upright snake plants, it forms a low-growing, wide rosette of exceptionally thick, leathery foliage.

Key Characteristics

  • Rosette Form: Leaves spread outward in a starburst shape, forming broad rosettes that can reach 2 to 3 feet (60–90 cm) across.

  • Foliage & Texture: Leaves are remarkably stiff, thick, and lance-shaped with prominent wavy (undulate) edges, sharp terminal points, and grayish-green to dark olive mottling with fine banding.

  • Spherical Blooms: Mature plants produce a massive, globe-shaped central cluster (inflorescence) of greenish-white to pale pink tubular flowers that open at night and emit a strong, sweet fragrance.

Varieties & Cultivars

  • Sansevieria kirkii var. pulchra: Natural variety with distinctive reddish-brown or pinkish margins and heavier mottled leaf patterning.

  • ‘Coppertone’: Popular cultivar selected from var. pulchra featuring a striking copper-bronze patina under bright light.

  • ‘Silver Blue’: Compact selection featuring heavy, silver-blue trough-shaped leaves with pinkish-red leaf borders.

Care Overview

Parameter Care Requirement
Light Bright, indirect light to filtered sun. Strong light preserves crisp leaf mottling and warm tones.
Substrate Extremely fast-draining, mineral-heavy succulent mix (60–70% inorganic pumice, coarse sand, perlite).
Watering Very Low. Allow the substrate to dry 100% between waterings. Reduce drastically in winter.
Temperature Warm-growing; maintain above 15°C (59°F). Protect strictly from freezing temperatures.
