Stephania Suberosa

Stephania suberosa is a rare and highly prized caudiciform vine native to Thailand and parts of Southeast Asia. It is closely related to other Stephania species but is especially valued for its thick, corky, deeply textured caudex, which becomes increasingly sculptural with age.

Key Features: Stephania Suberosa

  • Growth Type: Deciduous caudiciform climber
  • Caudex: Large, woody, cork-like base with rough, cracked surface texture
  • Vines: Slender climbing stems that emerge seasonally from the caudex
  • Leaves: Round to slightly lobed, peltate leaves with prominent radiating veins
  • Flowers: Small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers (rare in cultivation)
  • Size: Caudex can grow 15–40 cm (6–16 inches) or more over time

Caudex Pattern

The standout feature of Stephania suberosa is its heavily textured caudex, which develops:

  • Thick corky bark layers
  • Deep fissures and rugged surface patterns
  • A natural “ancient stone” appearance

Mature plants often look like living sculptures, making them highly desirable for collectors.

Growing Conditions

Light:
Prefers bright indirect light to partial sun. Avoid harsh midday sun, especially for young plants.

Soil:
Requires a very well-draining mix, such as:

  • 50% cactus/succulent mix
  • 25% pumice or perlite
  • 25% coarse sand or grit

Watering:

  • Water when soil is dry during active growth
  • Reduce watering significantly during dormancy
  • Excess moisture can quickly cause caudex rot

Temperature:

  • Ideal range: 20–35°C
  • Protect from temperatures below 12°C
Growth Cycle
  • Spring: Dormant caudex sprouts vines and leaves
  • Summer: Active growth phase with lush foliage
  • Autumn: Gradual slowdown
  • Winter: Complete dormancy; vines die back
Care Tips
  • Grow in a shallow clay pot to highlight the caudex
  • Provide a small trellis or support for vines
  • Avoid frequent repotting to reduce stress
  • Use light feeding during active growth only

Propagation

  • Seeds: Main propagation method, slow but rewarding
  • Caudex division: Rare and generally not recommended

Uses

  • Premium collector’s caudiciform plant
  • Bonsai-style display specimen
  • Decorative indoor/outdoor container plant
  • Highly valued in rare plant collections
