Ficus Petiolaris
Ficus Petiolaris
Ficus petiolaris, commonly known as the Rock Fig or Petiolate Fig, is a remarkable caudiciform tree native to Mexico. It is admired for its swollen trunk, striking heart-shaped leaves with vibrant red veins, and exceptional adaptability as a bonsai specimen. Its unique combination of ornamental foliage and sculptural form makes it a favorite among collectors of rare and caudiciform plants.
Key Features: Ficus Petiolaris
- Growth Type: Deciduous to semi-evergreen caudiciform tree.
- Caudex: Thick, water-storing base that enlarges with age, especially in container-grown plants.
- Trunk: Smooth grey bark that gradually develops character as the tree matures.
- Leaves: Large, heart-shaped green leaves with distinctive red or pink veins and long reddish petioles.
- Fruits: Small, round figs that ripen from green to reddish-purple and attract birds in their natural habitat.
- Size: Can reach 6–10 meters (20–33 feet) in nature but remains compact when grown in containers or as bonsai.
Caudex Pattern
Young plants develop a rounded, swollen base that gradually becomes:
- Thick and woody
- Buttressed with age
- Highly sculptural, making it ideal for bonsai and caudiciform displays
Exposing part of the caudex above the soil enhances its ornamental appeal.
Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers bright light to full sun. Adequate sunlight encourages compact growth and vibrant leaf coloration.
Soil:
Use a well-draining mix containing:
- 50% cactus or bonsai mix
- 25% pumice or perlite
- 25% coarse sand or grit
Watering:
- Water thoroughly during active growth.
- Allow the top layer of soil to dry before watering again.
- Reduce watering slightly during cooler months.
Temperature:
- Ideal range: 18–35°C.
- Protect from frost and temperatures below 10°C.
Growth Cycle
- Spring–Summer: Active growth with abundant new leaves.
- Autumn: Growth slows.
- Winter: May partially or completely shed leaves in cooler conditions before producing fresh growth in spring.
Care Tips
- Grow in a shallow bonsai or clay pot with excellent drainage.
- Prune regularly to maintain a compact shape and encourage branching.
- Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer.
- Repot every 2–3 years to refresh the growing medium.
Propagation
- Seeds: Produce the best caudex development.
- Stem cuttings: Root readily but generally do not develop the pronounced swollen base seen in seed-grown plants.
Uses
- Excellent bonsai specimen.
- Ideal for caudiciform collections.
- Attractive container plant for patios, balconies, and bright indoor spaces.
