Stephania Erecta
Stephania Erecta
Stephania erecta is a highly popular caudiciform plant native to Thailand and Southeast Asia, prized for its large, potato-like caudex and delicate climbing vines. It is one of the most sought-after ornamental caudex plants due to its minimalistic beauty and dramatic seasonal growth cycle.
Key Features: Stephania Erecta
- Growth Type: Deciduous caudiciform vine
- Caudex: Large, round to dome-shaped underground or partially exposed storage organ
- Vines: Slender climbing stems that emerge seasonally from the caudex
- Leaves: Perfectly round, shield-like (peltate) leaves with smooth edges and radiating veins
- Flowers: Tiny, yellowish-green flowers (rare in cultivation)
- Size: Caudex can reach 10–25 cm (4–10 inches) or more with age
Caudex Pattern
The most ornamental feature is its smooth, woody caudex, which develops slowly over years. In cultivation:
- Young plants show a round, smooth “stone-like” base
- Mature plants develop a thicker, more textured caudex
- Often grown partially exposed for aesthetic appeal
Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers bright indirect light to partial sun. Too much harsh afternoon sun can scorch leaves.
Soil:
Requires a very well-draining mix, such as:
- 50% cactus/succulent soil
- 25% perlite or pumice
- 25% coarse sand
Watering:
- Water only when soil is dry during active growth
- Reduce watering significantly during dormancy (leafless period)
- Overwatering is the most common cause of rot
Temperature:
- Ideal range: 20–35°C
- Must be protected from temperatures below 12°C
Growth Cycle
- Spring: Caudex sprouts vines and leaves
- Summer: Active growth with lush round foliage
- Autumn: Growth slows
- Winter: Fully dormant, leaves die back completely
Care Tips
- Use a shallow clay pot to highlight the caudex
- Provide a small trellis or support for vines
- Avoid disturbing the caudex during repotting
- Fertilize lightly during the growing season
Propagation
- Seeds: Primary method, but slow germination
- Caudex division: Rare and not commonly practiced
Uses
- Collector’s caudiciform specimen
- Bonsai-style ornamental plant
- Minimalist indoor décor plant
- Highly popular for modern plant styling and photography
