Stephania Kaweesakii
Stephania Kaweesakii
Stephania kaweesakii is a rare and highly collectible caudiciform vine native to Thailand. Celebrated for its impressive swollen caudex and delicate climbing vines, this unique species has become a favorite among caudiciform collectors and bonsai enthusiasts. Its combination of a sculptural trunk and graceful foliage creates a striking living display.
Key Features: Stephania Kaweesakii
- Growth Type: Deciduous caudiciform vine.
- Caudex: Large, rounded to irregularly shaped caudex that stores water and nutrients.
- Vines: Slender, twining stems that emerge from the caudex each growing season.
- Leaves: Attractive, nearly circular, peltate leaves with radiating veins, giving the plant a distinctive ornamental look.
- Flowers: Tiny, greenish-yellow flowers that appear in clusters, followed by small red fruits on female plants.
- Size: The caudex can grow over 30 cm (12 inches) in diameter with age, while the vines may extend several meters if supported.
Caudex Pattern
Young plants develop a smooth, rounded caudex that gradually becomes:
- Thick and woody
- Rough and fissured with age
- Highly sculptural, making mature specimens especially desirable
Many growers partially expose the caudex above the soil to showcase its unique form.
Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers bright indirect light to partial sun. Morning sunlight encourages healthy growth while protecting the foliage from intense afternoon heat.
Soil:
Requires a well-draining mix, such as:
- 50% cactus or succulent mix
- 25% pumice or perlite
- 25% coarse sand or grit
Watering:
- Water regularly during active growth (spring and summer).
- Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Reduce watering significantly during dormancy when the vines die back.
Temperature:
- Ideal range: 20–35°C.
- Protect from temperatures below 10°C.
Growth Cycle
- Spring: New vines emerge from the dormant caudex.
- Summer: Vigorous climbing growth and leaf production.
- Autumn: Growth gradually slows.
- Winter: The plant enters dormancy and sheds its vines and leaves.
Care Tips
- Provide a trellis or support for climbing vines.
- Grow in a shallow clay pot to display the caudex and improve drainage.
- Fertilize monthly with a diluted balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
- Avoid overwatering during dormancy to prevent rot.
Propagation
- Seeds: The preferred method, producing plants with naturally developed caudices.
- Caudex division: Rarely practiced and generally not recommended.
Uses
- A prized specimen for caudiciform collections.
- Excellent for bonsai-style displays.
- Ideal for decorative containers and bright indoor spaces.
