• Family: Asparagaceae.

• Native Habitat: The arid and semi-arid regions of the Western and Northern Cape provinces of South Africa.

• Key Features: Grows up to 8 inches tall from an underground bulb (corm). In winter and spring, it produces fleshy, spiraling green leaves that smell faintly of vanilla or butter cookies when exposed to warm sunlight.

Care Requirements

• Light: Requires bright, direct sunlight (at least 5–6 hours daily) to maintain its tight curls. In lower light, the leaves stretch out and straighten. A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal.

• Soil: Needs a gritty, exceptionally well-draining mix. A standard cactus and succulent soil blended with extra perlite, pumice, or coarse sand works best to prevent bulb rot.

• Watering: Follow a “soak and dry” method. Water thoroughly only when the top 2 inches of soil are completely dry. Reduce watering significantly during its summer dormancy period.

• Temperature & Dormancy: Thrives in standard indoor temperatures (15°C to 24°C). It is a winter-growing bulb; it naturally goes dormant in the peak of summer, during which the leaves turn brown and die back. Keep the bulb completely dry during dormancy and resume watering in autumn when new green tips emerge.

• Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during its active growing season (autumn through spring). Do not fertilize during summer dormancy.

• Propagation: Easily propagated by separating the small offsets (offsets or “pups”) that cluster around the main mother bulb during the repotting process in late summer or early autumn.
