Origin and Background

Monsonia multifida is a rare, dwarf caudiciform succulent native to the arid desert regions of Namibia and the Northern Cape of South Africa. It is naturally found in very restricted patches, particularly in the rocky, sandy flats near the mouth of the Orange River.

Belonging to the Geraniaceae family, it is surprisingly a succulent relative of the common garden geranium (Pelargonium). In habitat, it grows in extreme conditions characterized by very low rainfall, fierce winds, strong sun, and occasional dense coastal fog.

It is often referred to as the “Bushman’s Candle”. This nickname comes from the plant’s thick, waxy bark which is highly flammable and can endure in a skeletal form long after the plant itself has died. Visually, it boasts a swollen, fleshy stem (caudex) and delicate, highly divided, hairy green leaves that look like tiny fronds. It also produces beautiful pale pink to white flowers with magenta markings.
