Sago Palm Cycas Revoluta
Sago Palm Cycas Revoluta, commonly known as the Sago Palm, is a spectacular, architectural centerpiece. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm at all, but rather a cycad—a group of ancient, prehistoric seed plants that date back to the time of the dinosaurs. For Seedlings India, this is a premium, high-ticket offering that bridges the gap between tropical aesthetics and succulent-like resilience.
Growth & Characteristics
Native to southern Japan, the Sago Palm is prized for its rigid, symmetrical beauty and incredibly long lifespan.
-
Foliage: Sago Palm Cycas Revoluta features stiff, glossy, dark green fronds that are highly pinnate (feather-like). These fronds grow in a perfect, circular rosette, radiating outward from the center.
-
The Trunk: As it matures, it develops a rugged, textured, woody trunk (called a caudex) that stores water, giving it a striking, bonsai-like appearance even when young.
-
Growth Rate: It is notoriously slow-growing. A Sago Palm may only push out one “flush” of new leaves per year. Because it takes years to reach a substantial size, mature specimens command a very high retail price.
Cultivation and Care
While it looks like a tropical palm, its care requirements are much closer to the desert succulents you’ve been reviewing:
-
Light: It thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun. While it can survive in lower light conditions indoors, the fronds will stretch out and become weak, and it may stop producing new growth entirely.
-
Watering: The thick caudex is highly efficient at storing water. Treat it like a succulent: the soil must dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering, especially watering directly into the top of the crown, is the fastest way to kill it via rot.
-
Soil: A sandy, exceptionally well-draining cactus and succulent mix is perfect. It cannot sit in heavy, soggy potting soil.
