Sansevieria Erythraeae
Sansevieria erythraeae (also botanically recognized as Dracaena erythraeae) is a rare, highly architectural succulent often referred to in the trade as the “Pencil Sansevieria”. It is a fantastic, low-maintenance variety to feature at Seedlings India for customers seeking a sculptural plant that thrives on neglect.
Origin and Habitat
As its specific epithet (erythraeae) suggests, this species is native to the arid, rocky environments of the Horn of Africa, specifically Eritrea and Ethiopia.
Growth & Characteristics
Unlike the flat, sword-like leaves of standard snake plants, Sansevieria Erythraeae develops thick, perfectly cylindrical foliage.
-
Foliage: The leaves are dark green, smooth, stiff, and grow straight up, ending in a slightly blunt tip.
-
Form: It is a clumping variety. Rather than “walking” via runners like S. francisii, it densely packs new offset “pups” right at the base of the mother plant.
-
Blooms: When exposed to enough bright sun, it occasionally produces clusters of inch-long, tubular greenish-white blossoms tinged with pink.
Cultivation and Care
It is extremely hardy and shares the same basic care requirements as most premium desert succulents:
-
Light: It thrives in partial to full bright sun. While it will tolerate lower light conditions indoors, its growth will slow considerably.
-
Water: It is highly drought-resistant. The soil must dry out 100% between waterings to prevent the fleshy roots from rotting.
-
Soil: A sandy, extremely fast-draining cactus and succulent mix is essential.
