Giant Dioon Cycad Dioon Spinulosum

Giant Dioon Cycad Dioon Spinulosum , commonly known as the Giant Dioon or Gum Palm, is an ancient, palm-like evergreen plant belonging to the cycad family (Zamiaceae). Native to the tropical rainforests of southern Mexico, it is celebrated as one of the tallest cycads in the world.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Features an open, symmetrical rosette of long, arching, pinnate (feather-like) fronds that span up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) long. The leaves consist of up to 120–240 narrow leaflets edged with small, sharp spines.

  • Trunk: Grows on a stout, columnar, woody trunk that can reach up to 16 inches (40 cm) in diameter. In the wild, they can reach heights of up to 35–50 feet, though they typically stay between 10–13 feet (3–4 meters) in cultivation.

  • Cones: Being a cycad, it does not flower. Instead, it is dioecious (having separate male and female plants) and produces massive, woolly seed cones. Female cones can grow up to 30 inches long and weigh up to 30 pounds, resembling giant pineapples.

Care & Growing Requirements

  • Light: Thrives best in bright, indirect light to partial shade. Unlike many other cycads that scorch easily, it can handle full sun in cooler regions, but benefits from afternoon shade in intensely hot climates. It is also one of the few cycads that can adapt to bright indoor atrium settings near a sunny window.

  • Soil: Prefers rich, loose, and exceptionally well-draining soil (a gritty mix containing loam, perlite, or coarse sand). Good drainage is critical to prevent root rot.

  • Watering: Unlike desert cycads, the Giant Dioon comes from a tropical rainforest habitat and prefers more consistent moisture. Water thoroughly when the top couple of inches of soil feel dry, and reduce watering slightly during the winter.

  • Hardiness: It is adapted to warm, frost-free climates (USDA Zones 9–11), though it can tolerate brief, light freezes down to about 28°F (-2°C). In colder zones, it is frequently grown in large containers and moved indoors or under shelter for the winter.

Conservation & History

Cycads are living fossils that have existed for over 170 million years, predating most dinosaurs. In the wild, Dioon spinulosum populations have faced steep declines due to habitat loss and over-collection, earning it an Endangered status on the IUCN Red List.

Cycads predate the dinosaurs — and the Dioon Spinulosum is one of the most magnificent alive today. Native to the humid forests of eastern Mexico, this Giant Dioon develops a stout woody trunk crowned with long, arching glossy fronds. Relatively fast-growing for a cycad, it’s a landmark specimen for tropical gardens and large containers. Own a piece of prehistory.

Key Features:

  • Ancient lineage dating back over 200 million years
  • Large, slow-growing cycad with a thick, woody trunk
  • Long arching glossy green fronds up to 1.5–2 metres
  • Relatively fast-growing for a cycad in warm climates
  • Excellent for tropical gardens and large containers
  • Tolerates brief light frost once mature
