Sansevieria Boncel
Sansevieria Boncel, widely known as the Starfish Sansevieria, is the standard, full-sized parent cultivar of the ‘Boncel Mini’ and variegated forms you’ve been exploring. With its bold, sculptural shape, it fits seamlessly into minimalistic and modern botanical design aesthetics, making it a highly reliable, core inventory staple for the Seedlings India catalog.
Growth & Characteristics
The ‘Sansevieria Boncel’ is an architectural mutation of the standard African Spear Plant, bred to be much thicker and more compact.
-
Foliage: The leaves are extremely stout, fleshy, and perfectly round. They feature a smooth, light grayish-green base overlaid with distinct, darker green concentric rings or bands.
-
Form: Instead of growing upright in a loose cluster, ‘Sansevieria Boncel’ leaves naturally fan out rigidly from a central point, creating a precise, two-dimensional “starfish” silhouette.
-
Size: Sansevieria Boncel is much shorter and wider than the standard S. cylindrica. The thick fingers typically max out around 12 to 20 inches in length, creating a substantial but manageable footprint for tabletops and plant stands.
Cultivation and Care
Because of its massive water-storage capacity, this variety is virtually indestructible and thrives on neglect:
-
Light: Highly versatile. It prefers bright, indirect sunlight, which keeps its growth compact and its green banding vibrant. It will, however, tolerate low-light environments remarkably well, making it a favorite for interior design and office spaces.
-
Watering: The thick, cylindrical leaves act as water reservoirs. The soil must be allowed to dry out 100% between waterings. In an indoor setting, this often means watering only once every three to four weeks, and even less during cooler months.
-
Soil: A gritty, fast-draining cactus and succulent potting mix is mandatory. Adding extra pumice, perlite, or coarse sand ensures the fleshy root system stays aerated and prevents rot.
