Sansevieria Lilliput
Sansevieria Lilliput (syn. Dracaena ‘Lilliput’) is a charming, dwarf hybrid snake plant named after the island of miniature people in Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. It is highly prized by collectors and houseplant enthusiasts for its tiny footprint, tough-as-nails nature, and dense rosette form.
Key Characteristics
-
Ultra-Compact Size: Rarely grows taller than 4 to 8 inches (10–20 cm), making it a true mini/dwarf cultivar.
-
Curved Foliage: Features stiff, narrow, lance-shaped leaves that arc outward and curl slightly downward at the tips.
-
Variegation & Color: The leaves display a rich dark-green background decorated with fine, silvery-grey to pale-green horizontal bands.
-
Growth Habit: Forms a tight, neat basal rosette, slowly expanding over time by producing tiny offset rhizomes (pups) near the base of the mother plant.
Care & Maintenance Highlights
| Aspect | Requirement |
| Light | Adaptable to low light, but thrives best in bright, indirect sunlight which preserves leaf contrast. |
| Watering | Low. Allow the potting mix to dry completely out between waterings. Reduce to once a month or less in winter. |
| Substrate | Requires a well-draining, gritty cactus or succulent potting mix (50–60% inorganic pumice/perlite). |
| Temperature | Keep warm between 15°C and 29°C (59°F–85°F). Protect from cold drafts and frost. |
Origin & Lineage
-
Cultivated Hybrid: Sansevieria ‘Lilliput’ is a horticultural hybrid created in nursery culture through selective dwarf breeding.
-
Ancestral Origins: Its parent species (primarily from the Sansevieria trifasciata complex) originate from the dry tropical thickets and rocky scrublands of West and Central Africa.
