Boswellia Neglecta — The Forgotten Frankincense Tree

Boswellia neglecta is a rare and striking caudiciform tree native to the arid regions of East Africa — Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia — where it grows in rocky, sun-baked landscapes. A member of the Burseraceae family, it is closely related to the more famous Boswellia sacra, the primary source of commercial frankincense resin.

What sets Boswellia apart is its dramatic, swollen trunk (caudex) that stores water for survival through prolonged dry seasons — making it a prized specimen for collectors of rare caudiciforms and bonsai enthusiasts alike. The peeling, papery bark and compact, sculptural form give it an ancient, otherworldly appearance that commands attention in any collection.

Care Notes

Light

• Requires full sun to bright direct light.
• Provide at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
• Indoors, place it in the brightest south- or west-facing window.

Temperature

• Ideal range: 20–35°C (68–95°F).
• Can tolerate high heat well.
• Protect from temperatures below 10°C (50°F) and keep completely frost-free.

Watering

• Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.
• During winter dormancy, reduce watering drastically—only enough to prevent severe shriveling.
• Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot

Soil

Use a very fast-draining mix, such as:

• 50–70% mineral material (pumice, lava rock, coarse sand, perlite)
• 30–50% organic material (coco peat or composted bark)

A gritty cactus or caudiciform mix works well.

Fertilizer

• The Boswellia Neglecta Feed lightly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer (¼–½ strength) once a month.
• Do not fertilize during dormancy.

Repotting

• Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.
• Use a pot with excellent drainage.
