Sansevieria Cleopatra
Unlike the naturally occurring species you’ve been exploring, Sansevieria Cleopatra is a highly cultivated, complex hybrid. With its intricate patterning and perfect rosette shape, it is widely considered a collector’s centerpiece. Because it commands attention as a standalone botanical accent, it makes a premium addition to the Seedlings India catalog.
Origin and Creation
‘Cleopatra’ does not have a wild habitat. It was meticulously cross-bred in Indonesia by renowned Sansevieria breeder Budiarto. While its exact parentage is a closely guarded secret of the hybridizer, it is widely believed to be a cross involving Sansevieria phillipsiae and another heavily patterned variety.
Growth & Characteristics
This plant is grown entirely for its spectacular, highly detailed foliage.
-
Foliage Pattern: The leaves of Sansevieria Cleopatra feature a mesmerizing, almost pixelated pattern of dark green, pale green, and silvery-white horizontal bands.
-
Leaf Structure: The leaves are relatively broad but rigid, featuring a distinct, slightly ruffled or wavy margin that is highlighted by a thin, reddish-brown line tracing the edge.
-
Form: It grows in a flawless, slow-spreading basal rosette. It is relatively compact, typically staying under 10 to 12 inches in height and width.
Cultivation and Care
As a highly variegated hybrid, it is a very slow grower and slightly more demanding than the bulletproof green species:
-
Light: Sansevieria Cleopatra requires exceptionally bright, indirect light. If placed in a low-light environment, the plant will lose its striking contrast, and the intricate silver and green banding will fade into a muddy, solid green.
-
Watering: It is highly susceptible to root rot and crown rot. Water must be applied directly to the soil, avoiding the center of the rosette where moisture can get trapped. The soil must dry out 100% between waterings.
-
Soil: A highly porous, gritty mix (heavier on pumice or perlite than standard potting soil) is absolutely critical to keep the roots dry and aerated.
