Socotra Fig Tree Dorstenia Gigas

Dorstenia gigas, commonly known as the Socotra Fig Tree, is an extremely rare, pachycaul succulent endemic exclusively to the island of Socotra (Yemen). Belonging to the mulberry family (Moraceae), it is nicknamed the “holy grail” of caudiciform plants among collectors due to its swollen, bottle-like trunk and limited availability.

Key Characteristics of Socotra Fig Tree Dorstenia Gigas

  • Pachycaul Trunk: Develops a massive, succulent trunk that can reach up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) in diameter in habitat, storing water to endure harsh droughts.

  • Foliage & Growth: Features glossy, lanceolate dark-green leaves clustered at branch tips. Leaves often display reddish-pink hues on stems and undersides during high-light periods.

  • Inflorescence (Hypanthodium): Unlike true figs, it produces flat, shield-like or star-shaped green flowers typical of the Dorstenia genus.

Cultivation & Care Highlights for Socotra Fig Tree Dorstenia Gigas

Parameter Care Requirement
Light High light to intense full sunlight. Strong light is crucial to maintain a compact trunk and prevent leggy growth.
Substrate Extremely porous, gritty mix (70–80% mineral inorganic media like pumice, akadama, perlite, and lava rock).
Watering Water regularly during warm summer months when actively growing; drastically taper off as temperatures fall.
Dormancy Deciduous in winter or during cold spells. Keep soil almost completely dry when leafless to prevent stem rot.
Temperature Heat-loving and cold-sensitive. Must be kept above 12°C–15°C (54°F–59°F).

Essential Care Breakdown

  • Light: Socotra Fig Tree Dorstenia Gigas Requires intense, full direct sun (6+ hours daily). Strong light promotes a compact, swollen trunk (pachycaul habit) and vibrant leaf pigmentation. Indoors, use high-output LED grow lights if a southern window is insufficient.

  • Substrate Mix: Socotra Fig Tree Dorstenia Gigas Uses an ultra-porous mineral soil mix (75%–80% inorganic). Combine coarse pumice, perlite, lava rock, and akadama with just 20% organic potting soil. Avoid peat-heavy mixes that retain moisture around the caudex.

  • Watering Strategy:

    • Active Growth (Summer/Warm Season): Water thoroughly once the substrate dries out completely. While actively leafed out, it enjoys consistent moisture as long as drainage is rapid.

    • Dormancy (Winter/Cooler Months): As leaves yellow and drop, cut back drastically. Give only light sips once a month to keep roots from dry-rotting, or withhold water completely if kept cool.

  • Temperature & Cold Hardiness: Strictly heat-loving. Keep above 15°C (59°F) at all times. Temperatures below 10°C (50°F) combined with damp soil will cause swift root rot.

  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced, low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer diluted to quarter-strength every 3–4 weeks only during active summer growth.

  • Pot Selection: Terra cotta or unglazed clay pots are ideal because they allow moisture to evaporate through the container walls.
